How to prepare a fresh coconut

Firstly, look the coconut hedgehog in the eye and apologise for what will come next.

Drill into an eye with a corkscrew and drain out his watery soul.

Crack the coconut:

  • proper adults use a hammer

  • wannabe adults throw your coconut onto the pavement

Using a blunt knife, carefully push out the flesh from the coconut shell

The fun part is now over, I'm afraid. This brown skin is bitter and coarse so it's important to peel this off for the best flavour curry or sambal.

So, give your bicep a work out grating the coconut flesh. Try not to eat it all before you use it.
